Honey is one of the most valuable natural products, with unique characteristics that vary depending on its botanical and geographical origin. In recent years, the identification of MGO (Methylglyoxal), a compound associated with the particular antimicrobial properties of certain types of honey, such as Manuka honey, has attracted particular interest.

What is MGO?

Methylglyoxal (MGO) is a natural organic compound formed in honey through the conversion of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is found in the nectar of certain plants. Its concentration is used internationally as a key indicator for assessing the quality and bioactivity of certain honeys.

The higher the MGO content, the greater the antimicrobial potential of honey. For this reason, measuring this compound is a critical tool for producers, exporters, traders and standardization companies who wish to document the value of their products.

Why is the MGO determination important?

MGO analysis offers:

  • Scientific documentation of honey quality.
  • Support for commercial claims regarding the functional characteristics of the product.
  • Possibility of differentiation in the market.
  • Compliance with international requirements and quality standards.
  • Valuable data for export activities and certifications.

Particularly for honeys promoted as high-value-added products, accurate measurement of MGO content is a significant competitive advantage.

The challenge of analysis

The determination of Methylglyoxal is not a typical laboratory test. It requires specialized analytical equipment, appropriate chemical analysis methods, and high expertise in the processing and evaluation of the results.

For this reason, only a limited number of laboratories have the ability to reliably perform this measurement.

Our expertise in MGO determination

Our laboratory is one of the few laboratories in Greece that has the necessary know-how and infrastructure to perform specialized MGO analysis in honey.

With modern analytical equipment, strict quality control procedures and specialized scientific staff, we provide reliable and accurate results that can support both the research and commercial needs of our clients.

Our goal is to offer beekeepers, formulators and food businesses access to advanced analyses that until recently were available mainly in specialized laboratories abroad.
